Texts I Find Annoying

by Shane Holden – August 6, 2009

I see the convenience in text messages as well as the privacy they carry, especially if you are maybe at work or out with some people that you would rather not hear half of a conversation with someone else, but I think some texts are sometimes on the annoying side.

Those would be:

  • Messages that span more than the 160 character limit of a single text.  These conversations would be less time consuming by just making a phone call if at all possible.
  • Bulk texts—sending messages back to back within seconds that look similar to: 1. Hey! 2. Whats up? 3. What are you up to today? 4. Want to meet up for lunch? 5. Let me know!
  • One word replies, ex. okay, sweet, cool, yes, or any of the like.
  • Forwards—the occasional one is fine, but when they start getting sent in bulk, three or more back to back, they become annoying.
  • Follow-up texts to texts that were just sent.  If you’re asking me a question, please give me some time to respond.  Sending a message saying “?” or “so…?” just minutes after asking a question is just annoying.
  • Mass messages—sending the same message to multiple people asking something like “want to hang out tonight?”  When you know that the sender is going to be getting quite a few replies back and will choose which sounds most appealing to them.

I’m not a huge texter right now, so that may be why I find some annoying. So I may grow accustomed to any of the above at some point in the future and not be annoyed when receiving them.  Honestly, it really seems like, at least to me, that text messaging should have been the precursor to the phone call.

Anyways, any certain texts that you find annoying?

I don’t text at all, although I do Twitter. It seems rude to me when people talk on the phone OR text when they’re out with others. I’m kind of a “be where you are” person. Is that because I’m, um, over 30, or is it a legit complaint? :D

I think that’s definitely a legit complaint! I have it too :) I’m not much of a talker on the phone anyways, so I always try to keep it short and sweet (as well as any texts I do), but if I’m out with others, I’m definitely where I am and not somewhere else via phone or texting.

Got something to say?! Go for it!
