Text Messaging

Has everyone noticed how unbelievably popular text messaging is now?
Now I understand how useful it can be at times, but I have friends that do nothing but text message now. I’ve got one friend that went with us to Florida, and I swear he was on his phone text messaging the entire trip. I don’t even think he knew we were in Florida
Seriously, every one of my friends would rather send a text message than call now. And I’m not just talking one or two texts to say something, but 10+ texts to say something that could be said in a 1 minute phone conversation.
Don’t get me wrong now, I do initiate some text conversations. Like to my buddy Mark. He works, has a family and kids, so I would have no idea when calling would not be an interruption. So I’ll shoot him a text message that he can respond to as his convenience. This is a time when I think text messages are a good way to communicate. As would when someone is at work and don’t need to get caught up in a phone conversation, so they shoot a few discrete text messages. Good deal there.
But when your fixing to meet up w/ someone and you are minutes away, and they text and ask “where are you?”, why not just call? lol

Text messaging has been a hugely popular mode of communication here in Sweden for years…especially among teenagers. But it’s also widely used by adults for many of the same reasons you mentioned.
My family in the U.S. has just recently caught the bug…though both my Mom and one of my sisters didn’t even realize that they had text messaging on their cellphones. So I held a “texting seminar” for them during a road trip from Indiana to Ohio which resulted in 5 adults texting each other in the confines of a mini-van. It was kind of hilarious!
