Blackberry Winter

by Shane Holden on May 20, 2009

I’ve always heard my parents talk about something called Blackberry Winter, but just assumed that maybe it was just a real southern term to describe something that technically doesn’t exist.  But apparently it’s a real thing.

Oldtimers also knew that blackberries (Rubus fruticosus) need a cold snap to set buds on the blackberry canes, so as sure as night follows day, there will be a cold snap when the blackberries bloom, called Blackberry Winter.  Source

I was surprised to find out that it’s an actual term and was even used on the news to describe the recent cold spell that we’ve had, which I dislike very much by the way.

Sign Of Spring

by Shane Holden on March 21, 2009

Yesterday was officially the first day of Spring, and the trees are wasting no time.  Here’s a closeup of the Bradford Pear tree in our yard.  I wanted to take a shot of one of the ones up in Loudon, Tennessee while we were up there, but didn’t have a chance.  Things up there are a little bit behind, so their trees had just the blooms and no leaves yet.  It’s so nice to see things become more colorful and lively out, not to mention nice and warm.
