So a friend called me “too cynical” 12.19.07

So a friend sent me an email and said that I was “too cynical” because I basically said that during the holidays, people/family ask questions about your personal life, because most of the time they have ulterior motives and really don’t care.  Maybe they just need something to gossip to each other about, something to compare themselves or their kids to, or just want to be plain ole nosey or whatever the case may be.

By definition cynical is:

cyn·i·cal –adjective

1. like or characteristic of a cynic; distrusting or disparaging the motives of others.
2. showing contempt for accepted standards of honesty or morality by one’s actions, esp. by actions that exploit the scruples of others.
3. bitterly or sneeringly distrustful, contemptuous, or pessimistic.

.
So basically it’s saying that if you are cynical, then you believe that the motive behind certian actions of people are for their selfishness or their own gain.

I wouldn’t say that I am “too cynical,” but somewhat cynical yes.  Because of some learning experiences or lessons I’ve had, I’ve learned to distrust most people in general.  Those that don’t fall in the distrust category are close friends and immediate family.

In fact, I think that someone that is not in the least bit cynical of others is completely naive and too trusting.
