Ruby Falls

by Shane Holden – October 4, 2009

Today was a rainy and somewhat gloomy day out, so we decided that we’d go underground to spend an hour or so since the rain pushed off our plans to further explore Cloudland Canyon.  I’ve been here before, when I was probably 10 or 12, but couldn’t really remember too much about it.  The groups were very large, and we had the pleasure of being the caboose, or thereabouts most of the time.  Some guy grumpily called me and Chase “stragglers” as we passed their group because of falling behind shooting some of the rock formations.

Ruby Falls is a 145-foot high underground waterfall located within Lookout Mountain, near Rock City and Chattanooga, Tennessee in the United States.

The Falls are located at the end of the main passage of Ruby Falls Cave, in a large vertical shaft. The stream, 1120 feet underground, is fed both by rainwater and natural springs. It collects in a pool in the cave floor and then continues through the mountain until finally joining the Tennessee River at the base of Lookout Mountain. Source
