Potato Bin After 2 Weeks

by Shane Holden – May 4, 2009

With all the rain we’ve been having, and a few days of sun tossed into the mix, the potatoes have sprouted up out of the ground a good bit.  One was just barely able to be seen at all, while the others ranged in height up to about 5 or 6 inches.  We added another level to the bin and covered up the stems on the taller ones.

As pictured below, we went ahead and made another box up just incase this experiment works out, there’ll be a pretty good amount of potatoes when it comes time to harvest.

I am trying my luck with a potatoe bin as well, but with a slight difference. I build mine out of 2×4, 2′x2’4′h, and then I wrapped it with chicken wire. The potatoes are planted in about 6″ of soil and as they grow I am adding straw for them to grow up into. I am told that they will grow well in this medium and that at harvest time they will come out clean. I am hoping to harvest as many as 100 lbs of potatoes this fall.
I have never tried this but one site I checked (cant recall which one I’m afraid) said that they are successful with this method.
Wish me luck! and good luck with yours!

Thanks for the comment and sharing the method you are using! I can’t wait to see the results of the bins. I haven’t been able to grow mine as tall as I had wished this year from being so busy with work, but I’m hoping that the next time I do it I can keep up with them better. It’d be awesome if you could let me know how the straw works out for you, as you’ve got me very curious :) I’m not sure when harvest time is going to be, but I’m definitely going to have an update on them, so check back! Thank you! And best of luck with yours! :)

Got something to say?! Go for it!
