Possible Roadtrip in the Making

Over the weekend, my brother and SIL came up and brought an interesting idea with them. The idea of the four of us (my 2 brothers, my SIL, and myself) doing a planned out, site seeing, unforgettable roadtrip was proposed.
As a family, we never really went on any vacations while growing up. There was a couple of trips to Florida that we made, but they were only for a few days each. I sometimes get onto my parents for it. Not that I don’t understand that having 3 kids can sometimes be a headache, and sometimes money was tight. But in all honesty, we all missed out on alot of fun and all of those family vacation memories that could have been made. I really don’t understand it at all, but they are perfectly content with really only seeing what they have of the world and nothing else. I want to see, take pictures, and to be able to say “I was there.” My dad might have a little bit more desire to see things, but my mom doesn’t, and of course if she wouldn’t want to go, he wouldn’t.
For years and years, 10+ probably, my dad has talked at times how he would like to just take like a week or two off and go see some things. It actually saddens me to think about it, that the trip that he has always had planned out in his head, whether just an idea or genuinely wanted to make it happen, where we are little kids having fun, may never happen. I mean we are 23 and 26 now. I’m going to continue to push and hang on to the hope that we will one day do a long vacation as a family and enjoy it together; no matter what our ages are at the time.
Back to the possible roadtrip now. I think we’ve all come to the conclusion that we need to make the time, quit saying that one day we will, and actually make it happen. We are thinking about taking 5 days off of work, flying out west, renting a car, and doing nothing but seeing some of the sites there are to see in the 9 days we’d be away from home. I’m very excited about the idea of it. I’ve never been on a plane, so that’d be a first for me. I’ve been out as far as Phoenix about a year ago, but didn’t get to really do much exploring since we had to drive straight out there and back nonstop to make it back to work on monday. So going back out that way and seeing stuff is a must for me.
The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, the crater at Flagstaff, Las Vegas, the Pacific Ocean, what all should I be looking at while making some plans? I am definitely open for suggestions since the city of arrival is yet to be determined and we are all perfectly okay with drive time between checking things out. We just want to see stuff and take tons of pictures.

This is both poignant and exciting, Shane. It’s a bit sad for your father, but perhaps he can live vicariously through his sons, a little.
You have some great destinations planned! I’ve been to meteor crater several times, and it’s even more amazing to be there than one can imagine. If you’re going that far, you simply must see the city of Sedona. The red rock vistas are just stunning, and it’s a fun town to “tourist” in. There are some beautiful trails as well. Grand Canyon certainly is. You will have such a time! (If you haven’t been to Las Vegas, you’ll be astounded.)

Muse - Thank you for suggesting Sedona!
I looked up some pictures of it on Google and instantly decided that we have to go there! In person I bet it is an amazing site to see. Las Vegas will be so cool to visit as well. Always seen it on TV, all the lights and stuff, but never have had the chance to go yet. The more I think about these places, the more I can’t wait!! Tons of pictures will follow!
I’ll do an update and show our tentative route as soon as we get it figured out more.
