Our County’s SPLOST Tax
March 27th, 2008Tags: Taxes
At the last county election, a local tax called ‘SPLOST’ was voted on and approved. It is basically another 1% tax that is tacked onto the sales tax, which is supposed to be for improvements on our local road system. Since then, I have seen nothing at all be improved. A couple of years ago, our county did a county-wide waterline project. During this, they had to saw up strips across the road to get the waterline across, and when they were done w/ that they poured these strips w/ concrete. Well since then, all of these have sank down. I would have assumed that the many thousands and thousands of dollars that this new tax was going to be bringing in would have been used to repave some of these roads. Wrong!
Yesterday we drove up to the north end of the county and took the highway, which has thousands of cars on it daily. This road was pitiful! Potholes, frog hops, you name it and it has it. This is probably one of the most traveled roads in the county, and they don’t see it worth fixing. Ugh! The worst thing is seeing how they do see fit for spending the tax money. Proposing pointless round-abouts and widenings where I don’t personally feel they are needed, but could be used elsewhere.
I think the people that get to choose where to spend the money must have ’selective sight’ or something, because I just don’t see how they can miss some of the obvious problem areas that should be addressed first.
Just my rant of course ![]()
