My Disorganized Desk 10.28.08

A habit, good or bad, is one thing that takes so much determination to be able to change.  I’m presenting to you one of my worst habits, sitting next to the champion procrastination, disorganization.  No matter how hard I try to keep my desks neat and orderly, they always become this huge pool of whatever papers can find their way to it.  A mess-magnet I shall begin calling it

A few notable items found buried in the pile of papers in the picture above: my time sheet, voicemail directions, Dr. Pepper (a desperate attempt to sooth my cravings for a Coke, which we are out of here at the moment), and a few burnt CDs, which by the way will have to be looked at before determining if they are any good due to my lack of effort to write on them!

And yes, this bad habit gets worse, much worse…my desk at home :???:

  1. My desk at home is in horrible horrible shape. Everything ends up on the desk. Bills, homework, drinks, catalogs, coloring pages, things that needed filing months ago…the list goes on and on. It’s embarrassing.

  2. Marsha - You’ve almost described my desk at home to a T! It’s bad how quickly they get like that. Glad to know I’m not the only one though

  3. You did post a picture of your desk! I’m impressed, you said you would, but I wouldn’t have had the nerve. Mine goes between what is similar to yours here, much worse, and then, in a fit of frustration, extremely neat! It just doesn’t stay any one thing for long.
OK, but, how are you able to bury a can of Pepsi in a pile of papers?

  4. Muse - You caught something I missed when I read over my post! Haha, but I wouldn’t doubt it if there was another can in there somewhere

Something I didn’t mention in the post. Not only is my physical desk a mess, but the working directories on my computer are as well. I’ve taken a few hours over the past few days, and will some more tomorrow, to hopefully get it all neat and orderly. I’m going to get in the habit of naming files w/ a date at the end, like file_2008_10_30, so regardless of the last modified date, I’ll know when it is current to. This method will work nicely for creating an archive of all older files as well.

  5. Oh, Man, let’s not get into computer file organization!!! I commend you on your efforts. That’s SUCH a great idea to include a date right in the file name. I know in my “My Document” files, if I “hover” I can often discover the date last modified, but that doesn’t work for everything. I think I will adopt your method, thanks! How do you deal with deciding when to delete files? This is a BIG problem for me, LOL! :)

  6. Muse - Thank you! Hopefully this method will help out and make things a bit easier for you as well ;) For deleting files, I’m going to keep an archive of every edit date for anything that I might need a point-in-time version of it. But for things that will always just need to be the latest, I’m going to keep just the last 5 edits just to make sure that if anything were to become corrupt or anything I’ll be covered :) I used to just work on one file all the time, but when something breaks on it and you have to do everything you’ve already done again, ugh that’s no fun! lol
