Happy Thanksgiving! 11.26.08

A post by Muse yesterday mentioned Abraham Lincoln’s Proclamation of Thanksgiving, of which I don’t recall ever being mentioned in our textbooks in school. Maybe it was and I just can’t remember, but I took it upon myself to look it up last night and read it.

I never really thought about what the reasoning was behind Thanksgiving falling on a Thursday. This explains it:

I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

With that said, here are three things that I am thankful for:

First of all, I am very thankful for my family. I have a very good relationship with everyone in my family, and for that I couldn’t ask for anything much more.

Friends are always something to be thankful for. Friends are sometimes called the ‘family that we choose for ourselves,’ and rightfully so.

Like most people, some days I come home disliking work or dreading it when it’s time for a Monday to roll around again. But stepping back and seeing the mess that the economy is in, hearing of lay-offs every few days, the possiblity of it getting worse before getting better, etc. I am thankful for the job that I do have. I feel for those that have been layed off and are out looking for employment now when the choices are slim and the chances are as equally slim.

Please remember the reason behind the day off and have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone! :)

Family, friends, and steady work. Those truly are blessings, Shane, and it’s a good time to remember them. Thanks for the link! If your school was like mine, you heard all kinds of stories about Pilgrims and Turkeys and Native Americans and Pumpkins, but nothing about Lincoln! I’m pleased you looked up the proclamation and shared it with us. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your wonderful family!

Muse – Yep, sounds like the exact stuff I remember from school. You’d think as much influence as his proclamation had on shaping the holiday they would at least mention it. I very much enjoyed reading it and even shared it with some others that I know. My pleasure on the link ;) I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving too! :)
