Free WordPress Theme: ‘Instapic’

by Shane Holden – July 5, 2011

Instapic WordPress Theme

Instapic is a fun theme styled after the popular Instagram, allowing you to mimic the features that Instagram offers (minus the photo filters), yet run the photo blog on your own.  Instapic features Google Map support, as well as a ‘like’ counter to keep up with what your followers most enjoy.

Instapic is my first WordPress theme that I’ve created to release.  It’s bound to need some fixes or have adjustments made, but as with all things, it’s got to start somewhere.  I’m really pleased with the functionality, and how the overall theme has turned out.

Some highlights:

  • Google Map Support – The theme is coded to automatically display a map showing the location of the photo if the WP Geo plugin is installed and set up according to the settings mentioned.
  • Like Counter – It also features automatic display of a like counter, if the I Like This plugin is installed.
  • Threaded Comments – Although a maximum depth of 3 or less is recommended due to the layout, threaded comments are supported to allow the replies to be emphasized.
  • Featured Image Use – The theme uses the featured image feature of WordPress to display the image.  This allows the post contents to be strictly text for the sidebar display.

Congratulations; very nice theme. Didn’t know you were doing this. Good luck with it

  2. Shane, really like the theme! I do have a couple of suggestions/requests/comments, though…

It would be nice for the sidebar to either accept widgets, or allow for some additional content to be displayed in the “home page” and “page” contexts — maybe widgets if it’s in the home page context, and a special field text if it’s in the page context? That could allow for some really neat presentations.

Also, using the “featured photo” for the post photo can be problematic for those of us who use the WordPress iPhone app, as there’s no way to indicate a photo is “featured” through the app. Might there be another way to deal with that?

Finally, some control-panel-based customization would be nice, such as being able to choose or upload a different background (not that there’s anything wrong with the one supplied!) or adjust colors.

Thanks for your work on this. It certainly works well as designed, and looks good, even on a tiny MacBook screen.

Hi Geren – Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate them, as well as the excellent feedback and suggestions! :)

It’s nice seeing a live site running the theme, and by viewing yours, I’ve been able to find a few bugs that I’ve fixed. I just uploaded v0.3 which includes just some minor adjustments to the sidebar.php for the archives page navigation and the theme’s css to fix some of the layout problem that you might have noticed. If you’ve made any adjustments to the theme, and would like to know what to add/change, just let me know and I can get it for you.

All of your suggestions are exactly the type of feedback that I was hoping for! I don’t know how soon I can push out those features, but what I’ll do is put a roadmap up for upcoming features and release them as I can get them done.

I’ll do some searching and see what I can find for the ‘featured image’ issue. I’m hoping there’s a way to have WP automatically make the first image featured, or something similar.

Thanks again for the awesome feedback! :)

Got something to say?! Go for it!
