Dear Windows

by Shane Holden on September 2, 2010

You have no idea how frustrating it is to come into work in the morning and see a bright blue login screen from a recent restart from updating Windows that I didn’t initiate.  I’ve put off running Windows Updates because it is so frequent that you want me to do it, that it’s absolutely annoying.  If I had wanted to install the updates that you decided that I absolutely needed, I would have done so myself.  I don’t appreciate one bit you trying to keep my computer up-to-date and secure.  You remind me alot of Washington, passing laws to help keep me safe when I’m not even afraid at all of terrorists, etc.

The reason for my aggravation?  I leave items up in Adobe Photoshop as I’m working, notepads, wordpads, etc. of things that I’ve scratched down, either ideas or just temporary notes, that I now no longer have.

GoldenEye Remake

by Shane Holden on June 16, 2010

Today I saw a status update from a friend on Facebook about the infamous GoldenEye 007 from the Nintendo 64 being remade exclusively for the Wii.  After looking it up and seeing a clip, sure enough, the greatest first person shooter game of all time is being remade.  This brings back a bit of nostalgia for me, as when this game was originally released I was 12, and my friends and I played this game for literally hundreds of hours and still to this day proclaim it as one of the greatest games of all time.  I remember it was one of the biggest accomplishments of Chase’s as far as gaming went, because he beat the game 100%, even through the hardest mode available, 007 Agent.

One Year Of Last.fm

by Shane Holden on February 13, 2010

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been listening to Last.fm for an entire year already.  Over this year of using Last.fm, I’ve scrobbled 22,152 songs.

Here’s a look at the 8 artists that I’ve listened to the most.

Hit With Malware Again

by Shane Holden on January 24, 2010

I’m not exactly sure when or why, although I have my suspicions of links in emails being clicked, but my computer has been hit with malware once again.  It’s been turning off my Windows Live OneCare and giving me occasional popups in FireFox.  I really wish I was skilled enough to scan through the report logs and clean it myself, but right now I’ve got a HijackThis log posted on CyberTechHelp, and have already done their first followup post of cleaning various things, temporary internet files, delete index.dat files, history, temporary files, memory dumps, etc., and have ran ComboFix and posted the log files back to them for a fresher look.  I’ve got about a half hour in on it so far, so I figure another half hour and it should be cleaned up.  Not a ton of time involved really, but it’s just annoying.

Super Mario Bros. Wii

by Shane Holden on January 3, 2010

Yesterday my brother picked it up at Best Buy while we were up in Chattanooga, and he forgot it here when he went home yesterday.  Needless to say, today was mostly spent playing it.  I’ve been wanting to try it out since seeing that it was released and watching some video reviews of it.  I think it’s where Nintendo needed to go back to again, at least once more, for the Mario Bros.  I love how it uses the old sound effects and is a side-scroller, but includes some graphics from today as well as some new items and powerups.  I’m hoping he leaves it here until we can beat it 100% with all star coins collected.

Goodbye Flash Drive, Hello Dropbox

by Shane Holden on November 9, 2009

Dropbox is software that syncs your files online with other computers that you’ve installed Dropbox on.  Along w/ the sync, is file sharing to people you invite to specific folders or albums, online backup to their servers, and best of all, the ability to undo changes or even undelete files.

Dropbox

I’ve had a Dropbox account for a while now, and really enjoy using it to transfer some of my personal files between my work PC and mine at home.  I used to use my flash drive for all of that, but it pretty much stays at home now.  Which I actually prefer, because I was always afraid I would end up dropping it somewhere while getting something out of my pocket and not realize it.

Pink Ball From SocialVibe

by Shane Holden on September 4, 2009

If you earn 2,000 points for your cause on SocialVibe, they send you a pink stress ball.  I’m at 4,132 points so far, so with 100 points equaling 457 gallons (according to their Facebook app), that’s over 18,000 gallons earned for charity: water so far by me.  I’m hoping they add in some type of way to track your impact for whichever cause you support more accurately, just for your own statistical purposes.  But regardless if they ever do, it’s nice to give back.

Sending Ringtones To Verizon Phones

by Shane Holden on September 3, 2009

I’ve always tried to avoid the ringtone sites where you choose your carrier, enter your phone, and let them send it directly to your phone because I never feel like reading the terms to see what kind of hidden charges there may be.  It turns out that sending a ringtone via email to your phone is just as easy, and saves you any chance of being charged.  I’ve tried this in the past, and was unsuccessful, and I believe this is completely due to the cellphone address I was always trying to send it to.

First, the .mp3 file is supposed to be less than 200kb to be used as a ringtone.  Since we know the size limitation, you could either crop a song or tune to the specified section you want, or just download already created ones online.  Attach the .mp3 file to an email, and email it to your phone.  The address that you have to send it to for Verizon phones is yournumber@vzwpix.com, NOT @vtext.com.  From there you’ll just receive the text message with the attachment, and apply it as a ringtone.  Applying the ringtone is probably going to be different for most all make and models of phones, so you may need to check your manual.

Joined SocialVibe

by Shane Holden on August 20, 2009

Yesterday I signed up for an account at SocialVibe, which is social network that allows you to raise money for causes that you want to support by choosing a sponsor and displaying a badge of that sponsor that they give you.  I’m not a huge ad guy, so i like to avoid them as much as possible to avoid disrupting the time spent here for my visitors.  But at the same time, this type of advertising has sort of drawn me to it.  I think it’s the idea of taking something that you have, and using it to help enrich or improve someone else’s life or quality of life.

Personally I think the added social network aspect of it may be a bit much, as I’m already a member of the large well known ones, and really don’t need yet another one.  But if that’s what it takes to keep them running and around, I’m for it.

Tweaking CSS

by Shane Holden on August 15, 2009

CSS has always been a weak point of mine.  I’m more of a visual learner, so looking at just the code doesn’t really get me very far.  Pretty often I either tweak or add something to my blog, which in turn requires some CSS to make look right.  For example, just a few days ago, I added a background image of a shadow underneath any image that I insert into a post as a medium size image.  This would have taken me quite a bit longer, if it weren’t for the Firefox add-on Firebug.
