Potato Bin After 2 Weeks

by Shane Holden on May 4, 2009

With all the rain we’ve been having, and a few days of sun tossed into the mix, the potatoes have sprouted up out of the ground a good bit.  One was just barely able to be seen at all, while the others ranged in height up to about 5 or 6 inches.  We added another level to the bin and covered up the stems on the taller ones.

As pictured below, we went ahead and made another box up just incase this experiment works out, there’ll be a pretty good amount of potatoes when it comes time to harvest.

Built A Build-As-You-Grow Potato Bin Today

by Shane Holden on April 19, 2009

For as long as I can remember, my parents have always grown a garden each year, whether a small one in our backyard, or a much larger one on their piece of land in McCaysville.  They do it mostly for the fun of doing it, and of course enjoy the fruits of their labor later on.  So today when I ran across Build-As-You-Grow Potato Bins, I was sure that they would like to give it a try and see what the results would be compared to the traditional garden.

The way it works is as the potato plant grows taller you build up the bin and cover the stem with more dirt.  Covering the stem with the dirt causes the plant to turn it into a root, and since potatoes grow underground, the more roots you have the more potatoes will be produced.

Not Your Ordinary Straw

by Shane Holden on April 6, 2009

I took advantage of some more of my leave time at work last Wednesday-Friday to help do a new job and help complete a couple of others for my brother.  This had me spending all day Wednesday in Knoxville, TN, Thursday in Maiden, NC, and Friday in Hoover, AL.  So that was quite a bit of hours including covering quite a bit of miles between the three places.

Route from Dalton to Hoover

On Friday it was all three of us going in to complete a job that we had already done the first stage on a few weeks ago.  We got in at a good time, had a good superintendent to work with, and apart from having to deal with some itchy insulation, it went very well.

Lunch Is Better With Company

by Shane Holden on March 2, 2009

Lunch on a typical day is Chase and I clocking out at 1PM, choosing something that appeals to both of us for lunch, and hitting the drive-thru so we can eat and head back to work.  Really lunch is more of an inconvenience in the sense that we’re required to take an entire hour while lunch could easily take just a few minutes. I’d rather just eat while working and get to go home an hour earlier.  That is unless someone wants to get together and hang out for lunch.

Today we met up w/ our brother and sister-in-law and hung out at Panera Bread for lunch since they were in town.  It’s a pretty new place to eat here in Dalton and is really neat.  The inside has a warm feeling and reminded me alot of the sandwich shop that we ate at in Sedona.  We had a good time just talking and hanging out, and before I knew it, we were late to clock back in to work.  That’s how a lunch hour should be, enjoyable.

Two Delicious Firehouse Subs

by Shane Holden on February 22, 2009

Here’s a couple of delicious Firehouse subs that I had while down in Florida.  My usual is the Hook & Ladder, but an awesome manager gave us a Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket Sub to split and try.  So now I’m torn between the two for my favorite.

First is the Hook & Ladder, with the tomato, lettuce, and onions left off, and next is the Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket.

McDonald’s Chicken Sandwich

by Shane Holden on May 16, 2008

Along w/ the estimated 8 million other people that were expected to give it a shot, I was lured to McDonald’s yesterday to give their chicken sandwich a try for lunch.  Yesterday was a promotional day that gave anyone ordering a medium or large drink a free chicken sandwich.  My lunch break is at 1PM, so places are typically a little crowded, but they were packed w/ people yesterday.  I guess the current situation w/ the economy, gas prices, and everything, people just couldn’t turn down the offer for an almost free lunch.

Peeps

by Shane Holden on December 28, 2007

PeepsPeeps has got to be one of the best snacks there is that come out at the holidays.  I’ve actually got a few of them that I brought to work to snack on today.  Whoever came up w/ them did an awesome job because they’re not too sweet, they’re nice and fluffy, they’re just great!  IMO of course ;)

Fresh baked cookies…mmmm

by Shane Holden on December 6, 2007

Fresh Baked CookiesFresh out of the oven cookies with a big glass of milk is one of my most favorite snacks at night.  There’s just something about the baked cookies that taste so much better than the boxed cookies IMO.  Thats a picture of the ones that I’m enjoying tonight :D
