All-Nighter And Much Needed Sleep

by Shane Holden – March 26, 2009

I’ve said a few times before that I “feel like I haven’t slept at all,” but after doing my first all-nighter and operating for about 36 hours, most of which was working, with absolutely no sleep at all, I know exactly what that expression is supposed to feel like.

Tuesday I worked my regular 8:30-5:00, and had already agreed to take the night and do a job for my brother that was nearing it’s deadline.  We’ve done this a few times before, and while it isn’t ideal, you have to do what you have to do.  We had about a 2 hour drive to the job in Newnan, Georgia and got started right away.  Everything went smooth and we were packed back up and ready to head home at 4:00AM.  Before leaving, we went into a convienient store to get a drink, and the casheir said “have a good morning…or night.”  And there all that time I thought it was just me that was confused what you say at that time of night..or morning.

We made it home at 6:30AM, just in time to visit with our parents for a few minutes before they were off to work, time for us each to get showers and ready for work, and head off to the normal.  I felt good after showering for about 30 minutes or so, then it started hitting me and I felt aweful.  Same went for Chase too I think.  The entire day at work was just aweful.  Concentration was no where to be found.  Desire to do anything was nowhere either.  I made numerous trips to the water cooler because I noticed that the brief walk seemed to help out for a little bit.

After work, I crashed and slept for about 13 hours.  While I don’t feel completely rested, I feel like a completely new person today as compared to yesterday.

Wake up. WAKE UP! Are you awake yet Shane? C’mon, man, it’s been three days!
Wow, that sounds like quite the workload. I know you don’t do that all the time, but, whew! :)

 That cracked me up Muse! That was definitely an experience for sure. I don’t think I could make it something that I could do very often, because it was just soo draining and I can’t imagine it being very healthy either. If we get into any types of deadlines or anything, I’ll give something similar a shot, but I think next time, I’ll shoot for at least a couple of hours of sleep, whether in the truck or taking some vacation time at work the next day ;)

Got something to say?! Go for it!
