Visualize BP Oil Spill

by Shane Holden on May 31, 2010

Obviously the BP Oil Spill has had near constant coverage on the news for over the past month.  We hear how large the spill is, but in comparison to the Gulf of Mexico, it’s hard to picture it.  This cool site lets you see the size of the oil spill by overlaying it with maps that we are used to seeing.  Just enter in a location and see for yourself how large it actually is with some nice visual representation.

This is how the spill looks when overlaying Dalton.

210 Miles Means Your Out

by Shane Holden on May 27, 2010

I left work today on my bike for the first time this year, and didn’t get to make but one turn before I realized that I was out of gas.  I usually fill up if I start getting close to 200, because my reserve bar is usually flashing.  On this tank I had quite a few more highway miles than I usually have, and for some reason the reserve bar didn’t flash any at all.  It wasn’t a big deal even though it was 5 o’clock traffic.  Chase circled around when he realized I ran out of gas, and helped me push it out of the road.  We just pushed it from the red-light down the street next to the post office and into a parking lot.  I called dad to bring me some gas, and it was funny, he knew the exact reason I was calling.  I’m not going to push it any more to see the max I can get on a tank, because obviously to find out you have to run out.  On a different note, I got 48.5 miles to the gallon.

November Is Shaping Up

by Shane Holden on May 19, 2010

I was very pleased to see in the news that some career politicians careers have come to an abrupt end.  Hopefully the momentum of voting out incumbents stays strong throughout the November midterm elections.

In quick succession Tuesday night, the jittery inhabitants of Washington’s marble halls found three more reasons to worry about their staying power. Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter, the Senate’s patron saint of resilience, was turned out in a Democratic primary in favor of an unwanted rival, Representative Joe Sestak, who had neither major union support nor White House support. In Arkansas, Senator Blanche Lincoln, a model of southern Democratic moderation, was forced into a primary runoff by a self-styled outsider, Bill Halter, challenging from her left. And in Kentucky, the Washington establishment’s chosen Republican Senate candidate, Trey Grayson, fell to the son of a libertarian outlier who carried the flag of another party. “I have a message, a message from the Tea Party, a message that is loud and clear and does not mince words: We’ve come to take our government back,” declared Rand Paul, son of Representative and former presidential candidate Ron Paul, upon winning by a double-digit margin. Heading To Fairmont

by Shane Holden on May 18, 2010

Chase and I are leaving in the morning to go up to Fairmont, Minnesota for a few days.  We have a couple of meetings to attend to and will also get the opportunity to meet our long time friend, Mark and his wonderful family.  I’m excited about the entire trip.

Route from Dalton to Fairmont

We’ll be leaving about 4:30-5:00AM and according to Google, the trip will be about 1,028 miles and take 17 hours 27 minutes.  We’ll make the trip back home on Friday sometime.

Season/Series Finales

by Shane Holden on May 17, 2010

The only thing I hate about getting caught up in a show is it’s finales.  Whether it’s a season finale with a hiatus between the seasons, or an entire series finale, they are inevitable and no fun.

Survivor’s finale was last night, and while they called it their best season yet, I don’t think I can necessarily agree.  But it is hard to choose a best season when the dynamics change so much between the players, their strategies, the elements, and the players personalities.  I hated to see that the final 3 were all quite possibly millionaires, given that Russel was without a doubt one, and Parvati and both Sandra already having won the game of Survivor previously.  Of course though, that was already a gripe of mine when the season started, and one of the negatives that come with letting people play the game multiple times.  Regardless, it was a great season, and I’m glad to see that there will be a 21st season in the fall.
