Organizing Digital Photos

by Shane Holden on April 29, 2009

We’ve had a digital camera around our house for probably the last 10 years.  The way I used to copy our photos off of the camera was to simply make a folder called ‘Family Photos’ and copy the photos into it.  As time passed, the folder would simply act as a timeline of oldest to newest, which turns out not to work well at all.

Previously if you wanted to find a picture of a certain holiday, you would just scroll down using the thumbnails view in Windows until you found the pictures that were taken around that time.  I know for certain that my dad has spent long periods of time before looking for certain pictures.  It’s just a messy way of storing them in hindsight; especially when the numbers get into the thousands.

I’ve had reorganization on my mind for quite some time and happened to stumble across a site a few days ago, OrganizingYourPhotos.com, that lays out an example of a tree structure using levels and other tips for organization.  This gave me the motivation to work on it today.  The idea is to start out broad and narrow down the event or place until you get down as specific as you want.

Four Leaf Clover

by Shane Holden on April 26, 2009

I have an eye for spotting these if I’m standing near a clover patch, and our backyard has quite a few of them this year.

Warm Weather I’ve Been Waiting On

by Shane Holden on April 23, 2009

I spent a few hours this morning outside doing some field surveying.  It’s sunny and supposed to be mid 80°s today, as well as for the next 5 days.  This is the weather I very much enjoy.  The type of temperatures that force you to shed your jackets or hoodies and forget the cool wet weather that’s maybe finally over for a while.

I even spent my lunch hour at home today and swapped for my bike.  It’s just too nice outside to pass up the opportunity to feel the sun and warm air on your body as you travel the same route back to work that seems so different on a motorcycle.

There’s so many other things that have been held up waiting on the summer months.  Our house is well overdue for new shingles.  We’ve been working the past few afternoons on putting up a new fence at my grandma’s house, and then there’s my parents new place that was coming along nicely until we just put a hold on it until the warm months came back.  Lot’s of outside work — which is nice.

Built A Build-As-You-Grow Potato Bin Today

by Shane Holden on April 19, 2009

For as long as I can remember, my parents have always grown a garden each year, whether a small one in our backyard, or a much larger one on their piece of land in McCaysville.  They do it mostly for the fun of doing it, and of course enjoy the fruits of their labor later on.  So today when I ran across Build-As-You-Grow Potato Bins, I was sure that they would like to give it a try and see what the results would be compared to the traditional garden.

The way it works is as the potato plant grows taller you build up the bin and cover the stem with more dirt.  Covering the stem with the dirt causes the plant to turn it into a root, and since potatoes grow underground, the more roots you have the more potatoes will be produced.

I’m Conficker Free

by Shane Holden on April 14, 2009

According to the Baylor Conficker Eye Chart, my computers at home and work both are free of Conficker.  It’s funny how much media attention this received back before the first of the month and afterwords almost nothing at all. I just happened to stumble upon this while surfing the net rather than seeing it broadcasted on the news or whatnot.

Goodbye Dalton Redlight Cameras

by Shane Holden on April 9, 2009

Dalton Mayor and City Council voted unanimously Monday night to terminate the city’s contract for red light cameras. It was a unanimous decision. The cameras have been up for more than a year now. And City leaders say they’ve outlived their usefulness.

They are saying that these in town have reduced redlight violations by 75% while in use, which I must applaud.  I’m not a big fan of the cameras, but I do understand that in order to receive a ticket, you have to run a full blown redlight.  So going under one that is yellow doesn’t count.  The only thing that I don’t like about having them is how they usually will cause someone to slam on the brakes to avoid going under even a yellow light.

Impression I Leave

by Shane Holden on April 8, 2009

Today I was given a glimpse of the impression that I leave as a person through my actions and dialog.  I do things daily, whether it’s just being friendly or maybe giving them a hand or something as little as holding the door.  Not because I want to influence the impression I leave, but just because that’s the person I am.

This morning my brother and I met up with a local man to show us some specific grave sites in the local cemetery to GPS to finish up a project at work.  We chitchatted while walking between the sites about everything like work, weather, motorcycles, etc.  At one point he asked us what Church we went to.  One of us responded with something like, “we don’t really have one that we go to.”  He then replied with, “Really? I thought y’all would’ve since y’all seem like real nice guys.”

Not Your Ordinary Straw

by Shane Holden on April 6, 2009

I took advantage of some more of my leave time at work last Wednesday-Friday to help do a new job and help complete a couple of others for my brother.  This had me spending all day Wednesday in Knoxville, TN, Thursday in Maiden, NC, and Friday in Hoover, AL.  So that was quite a bit of hours including covering quite a bit of miles between the three places.

Route from Dalton to Hoover

On Friday it was all three of us going in to complete a job that we had already done the first stage on a few weeks ago.  We got in at a good time, had a good superintendent to work with, and apart from having to deal with some itchy insulation, it went very well.
